Abdullah: Have RT in all housing areas
ALOR STAR: All housing areas should have Rukun Tetangga and neighbourhood watch schemes to protect children and property, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.
In the wake of the recent kidnapping and murder of eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, Abdullah said such neighbourhood watch schemes were necessary to help avert robbery, break-ins, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
“Not all the neighbourhoods have RT. Neighbourhood watch schemes are concentrated in high-risk neighbourhoods,” he said before breaking fast at the Kedah Menteri Besar's residence in Sri Mentaloon here yesterday.
Abdullah also called on the people to actively participate in RT.
“The elderly and community leaders could look into what is needed to keep their area safe,” he said.
Noting that the murder of Nurin had aggrieved the entire nation, Abdullah said people of all races could work together to ensure their neighbourhood was safe.
He also called on parents to “invest a little” in nannies or caregivers to ensure their children were being taken care of while they were at work.
He recorded his appreciation to Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid for his commitment to ensure all programmes under Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) were implement well.
Abdullah presented donations to eight children’s homes in Kedah.
Also present were Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainudin Maidin and Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad.
