Cops free child from cage

SEREMBAN: Police rescued a seven-year-old girl who was kept in an iron cage behind her house in a wealthy neighbourhood in Seremban Two following a tip off from neighbours.

Four policemen arrived in two cars at the Vision Homes residential area and freed the girl at about 10am on Saturday.

According to sources, the child was frequently caged by the mother.

A neighbour who chose to remain anonymous said that he heard the girl's cries just before midnight on Friday.

“When I got up to check, I saw this little girl in the iron cage. It was so sad to see a child calling out for her mother to release her.

“After a while, the cries stopped. I thought the mother had taken her in but that was not the case,” he said.

The neighbour, who claimed to have seen the girl being caged on several occasions, said that he decided to call in the police on Saturday morning when he saw her still in the cage.

“I got angry. She must have been kept there the whole night,” he said adding that it was difficult to peer into the house as it had a high perimeter wall.

Another neighbour who also spoke on condition of anonymity said that the mother had even shut her daughter out of the main gate for several hours.

“I have seen the girl outside the house for up to four hours. This is very unbecoming of a mother, especially when there are so many cases where children have become victims of lust,” he said.

The neighbour said the girl had no siblings and her father was seldom at home. It is understood that the policemen also advised the mother, a housewife, to stop ill-treating the child.

When contacted, state crime chief ACP Huzir Mohamad said it was too early to establish why the mother acted in such a manner.

Efforts by reporters to interview the mother were futile.
