Rooftops blown off as Lekima lashes Sabah
Rooftops were blown off and trees uprooted when the tail of tropical storm Lekima hit the western coast of Sabah late on Saturday.
Police and firemen said that all incidents reported were minor and mainly involved roads being blocked by fallen trees in villages but could not give an estimate of the losses.
A trader Alihassan Awang Nasar, 50, who had just completed his terawih prayers at a mosque in Kampung Sungai Padang said he was shocked to see his roof fly off.
“I just stood and watched. Luckily no one was in the house,” he said when state Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Rahim Ismail, who is also assemblymen for Pantai Manis visited them.
Alihassan’s sister Dayang Aishah, 51, said she managed to flee from her house as the roof was ripped off. Other villagers came to her rescue before helping her retrieve her valuables.
“I am lucky to have escaped unhurt,” said Dayang Aishah, whose children are studying in Kuala Lumpur. She lived alone at the house.
A spokesman for the Sabah Meteorological Department said the storm was associated with Tropical Storm Lekima which is blowing through the South China Sea and heading towards Vietnam.
