Mahathir fine after surgery

KUALA LUMPUR: After more than five hours in the operating theatre, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s coronary bypass surgery was deemed a success.

His daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir told the press yesterday that his condition was stable and the team of doctors involved were “very happy” that the surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN) went according to plan.

Family members, she said, had handled Dr Mahathir’s surgery better compared to his first coronary bypass in 1989 at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital after a heart attack.

Dr Mahathir, 81, was taken to IJN’s operation theatre complex at 8.45am, according to a statement released by IJN.

The operation started at 9.40am and was completed at 3.05pm. He was transferred to the ICU at 3.30pm.

Marina added that her mother, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, was tired but happy.

Marina was overcome with emotion when she thanked Malaysians for their e-mail, messages and SMSes, which extended their prayers for her father and family.
