Early checks on study options

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s never too early to start looking for tertiary education options, judging by the age of many visitors to Star Education Fair 2008.

Apart from accompanying older siblings to the fair, many students in their early teens were also making enquiries for themselves.

“Some of the students are fairly young. I’ve seen Form Three and Four students checking out courses to see what career path to follow,” said University College Sedaya International local marketing head Lim Boon Wah.

KDU College principal Dr Chia Chee Fen said there was a 13-year-old student making enquiries about the college’s programmes.

“Many of them seem to be getting career-conscious at an earlier age,” Chia said.

As it was a Sunday, many families came together to the fair held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre to shop for courses, from part-time to post-graduate types.

Sunway University College marketing director Wong Lei Lei said that was a good sign.

“It is important to engage both parents and children in educational planning because it involves financial planning as well,” she said.

The Higher Education Ministry booths also handled numerous enquiries from both parents and students.

Said Mohd Amin Mohd Yusof, head of the ministry’s marketing and promotions unit: “The response is very, very good. Our pavilion is like a reference place for visitors to check out both private and public institutions.”

He said most queries concerned the criteria for admission to public universities, recognition of courses, and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans.

More than 70,000 visitors thronged the five halls in KLCC with many making return visits to check out the 180 exhibitors at more than 470 booths.

Visitors were also given free copies of Sunday Star, thanks to corporate sponsors Vista and Prudential Services.
