Bus driver in fatal crash had 13 summonses

By CLARA CHOOI

IPOH: The driver of the double-decker express bus that saw three of its passengers killed in a crash near Slim River on Friday had 13 outstanding police summonses.

Records at www.myeg.com.my yesterday revealed that Ruslim Isa, 43, who was sent to Teluk Intan Hospital for a broken right leg after the 5.55pm accident, had seven summonses for speeding, five for illegal overtaking and one for not using an overhead bridge.

The summonses, amounting to RM2,660, dated as far back as 2000.

Passengers who survived the crash claimed that Ruslim had been speeding when the incident occurred along the highway between Slim River and Behrang during a downpour.

Slim River deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Adzhar Othman said blood samples taken from Ruslim would be sent to the Chemistry Department to test if the driver had been on drugs during the time of the incident.

The mangled bus would be sent to Puspakom for checks on Monday.

“At this point, we don’t know the cause of the accident, whether or not it was due to human or technical error,“ he said.

The crash, which had initially killed two passengers – Mohd Zailani Mustafa, 23, of Sungai Nibong, Penang, and Lee Nian Ning, 21, of Taman Gelugor, Penang – claimed its third victim yesterday.

Pang Poon Eng, 20, from Gombak in Selangor, died at 1.30am at the Ipoh Hospital here.

Nine other passengers of the Kuala Lumpur-bound Konsortium bus were warded at the Slim River Hospital and the Ipoh Hospital for critical injuries, while the others received outpatient treatment.

The bus, which left Penang at 2.20pm on Friday, was carrying 39 people – 27 people on the upper deck and 10 at the bottom deck, including Ruslim and his co-driver.

The crash occurred when Ruslim was believed to have lost control of the vehicle causing it to skid, slam into the divider and land on its side between the north and south-bound lanes of the highway.

An oncoming MPV on the northbound lane with four people crashed into the bus.

One of the car passengers escaped unhurt while the three others sustained light injuries.

The incident caused a massive traffic jam on both sides of the highway.
