It’s an invasion of his privacy

DESPICABLE! That was my reaction after watching scenes from the sex video purportedly showing a prominent Johor politician with a woman on the Internet.

I am disgusted that certain individuals can stoop so low as to spy on people’s private activities and then distribute the recordings to serve his own agenda.

With the elections looming, it does not take a genius to figure out that this is the first political salvo fired by individuals who choose to use twisted means to achieve their political objectives.

One finds it difficult not to compare this with the same unfortunate incident that took place back in 2001 involving young and upcoming Taiwan politician Chu Mei-feng – her sex videos sold like hot cakes then.

Back then, Malaysians watched in disgust how Taiwan politics deteriorated into using spying, infringement of privacy and sex as political weapons.

Politicians are public figures; they have the moral responsibility to be an example to the public.

Nevertheless, what public figures do behind closed doors should not be for us to pry into, as back in their private spaces, away from the public eye, they are no different from us.

They are also fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, colleagues and friends.

A larger issue is at stake here. I am concerned how low politics in Malaysia has spiralled down to.

Personal attacks and character assassinations seem to be more and more rampant and acceptable.

Is this the Malaysia that we hope to pass down to our children?

A country where privacy is no longer respected and can be abused for our own benefit?

I wonder what will come next for us – fist fights in Parliament, perhaps?

DISGUSTED,

Kuala Lumpur.
