Tee Keat wins, Soi Lek is MCA No. 2
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Ong Tee Keat is the new MCA president. The Transport Minister defeated former vice-president Datuk Chua Jui Meng in the MCA elections at Wisma MCA here on Saturday.
Tee Keat polled 1,429 votes while Jui Meng received 917 votes.
Tee Keat, whose election manifesto was ‘My Agenda for Change’, had urged party members to give him the mandate to bring about reforms for MCA.
"MCA needs to come to terms with the new political realities fast. We need to pick up the pace of reform. We need to reach out to the young voters and we need to adopt new ways of doing things within MCA and Barisan Nasional,’’ he had posted on his blog early Saturday morning.
In the race for the deputy president’s post Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek emerged victorious.
The others vying for the deputy presidency were Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Datuk Donald Lim and Tanjung MCA deputy chairman Lee Hack Teik.
Soi Lek had 1,115 votes while Ka Chuan polled 1,001 votes, Donald had 209 and Lee had 10 votes.
The former vice-president quit all his party and government posts over a sex video recording of him in January. The outspoken leader saw his 25-year-old political career collapse overnight following wide circulation of the video.
Dr Chua, 61, whose manifesto read: ‘Be the Force of Change: Real Courage, Real Politics’, had said earlier that the 2008 MCA polls were to vote in those who could understand the situation of the community and nation, and effectively rebuild MCA and put it back on track.
This, the former Health Minister stressed, was of utmost importance after the 59-year-old party’s dismal performance in the March 8 general election, where it won only 46 of the 130 parliamentary and state seats it contested.
The four new MCA four vice-presidents are Perak’s Datuk Kong Cho Ha, former MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai,Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen and Johor deputy MCA chief Tan Kok Hong.
Kong polled 1,798 votes, Liow had 1,725 votes, Dr Ng had 1,659 votes and Tan had 1,329 votes.
The others in the fray for the four vice-presidents’ posts were Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn,Kedah’s Datuk Chor Chee Heung, former Serdang MP Datuk Yap Pian Hon and Kuala Langat division vice-chairman Lim Teck Chong.
Dr Ng, the Women, Family and Community Development Minister created history by becoming the first elected woman MCA vice-president.
The former Wanita MCA chief, whose slogan for the polls was ‘Three + One: The Perfect Formula’, had urged the central delegates to look at a candidate’s track record and potential instead of agenda.
“Leaders must be agents of change. As the Women, Family and Community Development Minister, I have been pushing to have 30% of women in the decision making process. I will not be practising what I preach, if I do not contest,’’ she had said, when commenting on her candidacy.
The elected Central Committee Members are:
Lee Wei Kiat, Datuk Wong Foon Meng, Datuk Tan Chai Ho, Tan Cheng Liang, Dr Hou Kok Chung, Lee Chee Leong, Gan Ping Shou @ Gan Ping Sieu, Datuk Yu Chok Tow, Wong Nai Chee, Lee Sing Chooi, Wee Jeck Seng, Gan Tian Loo, Datuk Dr Yeow Chai Thiam, Datuk Chong Itt Chew, Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, Datuk Ti Lian Ker, Datuk Liew Yuen Keong, Datuk Wong Mook Leong, Kong Sing Chu, Datuk Khoo Keok Hai, Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, Loh Seng Kok, Datuk Wong Siong Hwee, Dr Por Choo Chor and Datuk Loke Yuen Yow.
