Tan’s seven steps to preserve environment

PETALING JAYA: Inspired by the items discarded from her house each day, artist Tan See Ling, 36, decided to drive home an environmental message by creating sculptures made of newspapers, fabric and plastic bags as a work of art.

She has also coined her own seven steps to preserve the environment which are reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, restore, revere and rethink and had created an art form depicting this.

Tan created seven dolls made of bottles wrapped in cloth, each representing these seven steps.

Her sculptures will be featured in the “Art With A Heart” festival organised by The Star, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and the National Art Gallery.

“I believe recycling starts from home. We can make a huge difference if every family reduces their household waste,” said Tan, who is an art teacher at an international school.

Another of her pieces, titled Happy Gathering, showcases a community of rabbits of various shapes and sizes reaching out to get carrots hung on a pole.

“I wanted to include family themes in my sculptures because parents have to educate their children on preserving the nature,” she said.

“Parents should start being more eco-friendly in their everyday life to save the Earth for future generations.

“I am appalled to see adults throwing rubbish out of their cars when they should be setting a good example for their children,” Tan said, hoping her sculptures would encourage families to start recycling and foster closer bonds.
