Bolster unity among Malaysians, urges DPM (updated)

KUALA TERENGGANU: The people should reject vehemently any forms of unruly and indecent behaviour manifested by certain quarters against the country’s leaders.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government does not want such behaviour to become the norm because it could undermine the unity and security in the country.
“If there are quarters with ulterior motives who don’t understand the basic tendency of courtesy, being rude and refraining from respecting the leaders, the people must reject them as this kind of behaviour cannot become the norm,” he said Thursday after launching the Fei-World Endurance Championship 2008 “countdown” at Gong Badak sport complex here.
Taking a swipe at the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) incident at the Prime Minister’s Hari Raya open house in Kuala Lumpur last Wednesday, Najib stressed such behaviour could lead to losses to the country in terms of economy and national stability.
“We can’t compromise on such matters which could jeopardise our economic growth and peace,” he said.
He said Malaysians should snub any quarters who manifest indecent behaviour, are disrespectful and unruly.
“The basic tenet of our culture is being courteous and we should not condone such actions,” he said. Najib also urged Malaysians to use the festive season to strengthen racial unity and to avoid any sensitive elements that could slight the feelings of the other races.
