MALACCA: A 22-year-old police constable, attached with the criminal investigation department here, is in a coma after he was viciously attacked by a group of men in Ayer Keroh.

Kons Mohd Fairus Shafie from Kota Tinggi, Johor, had just finished supper with several friends at a restaurant nearby when the attack happened at about midnight Saturday.

He was beaten unconscious during the assault by some of the attackers who were armed with helmets.

Members of the public went to his aid and sent him to the Ayer Keroh police station nearby. His colleagues then rushed him to Malacca Hospital.

State chief police officer SAC I Datuk Mazlan Mansor confirmed that 15 suspects, aged between 18 and 40, were detained in several locations around the city Sunday morning in connection with the case.

Among those held were three people who had earlier sought treatment for light injuries at the Malacca hospital, he told reporters at a press conference held at the police contingent headquarters in Bukit Beruang on Sunday.

He said Kons Mohd Fairus was not on duty at the time of the incident. Police are investigating the motive behind the attack.

He also advised members of the public with information to come forward to assist police in the investigation.

The initial premise is that the attack could have been motivated by jealousy and revenge. Kons Mohd Fairus has been attached with the state police contingent February 2006.
