Don’t speculate on signboard vandalism, say police
GEORGE TOWN: The public should not speculate on any political motive behind the defacing of two bilingual road signs near Lebuh Acheh’s junctions with Lebuh Canon and Lebuh Carnavon last Sunday.
OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said police viewed it as vandalism by some “mischievous” people.
“We are still investigating the case. In the meantime, we have beefed up patrolling at the area of the new road signs,” he told reporters here yesterday.
The signs, with Bahasa Malaysia and Arabic words, were defaced with red paint barely 48 hours after they were put up.
On Monday, the Penang Municipal Council lodged a police report over the incident.
The signs were part of the state government’s efforts to boost tourism in George Town which was awarded a joint Unesco World Heritage Site status with Malacca in July.
The multilingual move, however, received opposition from certain quarters who saw it as a threat to Bahasa Malaysia’s status as the country’s national language.
