Negri Regent: Fatwa council must consult us
KUALA LUMPUR: The Regent of Negri Sembilan has joined his royal brothers in Perak and Selangor in proposing the National Fatwa Council consult the Conference of Rulers before issuing edicts in future.
Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja’afar said rulers were duly consulted on most occasions, being the head of the Islamic religion in their state.
“Recently, the council has come out with edicts on tomboys and yoga. I am not at all certain that members of the royalty had been consulted on these issues and if not, I would certainly encourage the council to do so,” he said at his royal luncheon address on “The Role of the Constitutional Monarchy in 21st Century Malaysia” at here yesterday.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah had said that the council should refer such matters to the Conference of Rulers before making a public announcement.
Tunku Naquiyuddin said it would be in the interest of Islam Hadhari, the moderate form of Islam the Government was propagating, if the rulers were fully involved in giving their opinions to avoid the extremist tendencies.
“Islam is a progressive religion and the ulama should be confident of the followers’ faith rather than micro-managing their way of life.
“If I go to a church or a Buddhist temple, is there any fear of me converting? Take the adat of bersanding which is based on Indian influence, will it be banned in the future? Where do we draw the line?” he asked.
