Kampung Boy graces our stamps

KUALA LUMPUR: Lat’s Kampung Boy cartoons will soon be immortalised on Malaysian stamps.

From Dec 1, the 30sen and 50sen stamps will feature Kampung Boy and his depiction of Malaysian life.

Lat, whose real name is Datuk Mohamed Nor Khalid, said having his comics on the stamps was a great honour and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He said he shared a close relationship with the postal service when he was younger.

Stamping his identity: Lat with the special stamps that feature his Kampung Boy cartoons.

“When I was in Form Four, I used to submit my comics to Berita Minggu in huge envelopes from the post office and also waited anxiously for the postman to arrive at my house,” said Lat.

He would be disappointed whenever the postman brought back the big envelopes but excited when the postman delivered smaller ones which signified that his comics had been accepted.

“I will probably create cartoons on postmen from my memories of them,” he added with a smile.

At a press conference on Stamp Week 2008 yesterday, Pos Malaysia Bhd chairman Tan Sri Dr Aseh Che Mat said:

“We hope the cartoons will encourage children to take up the hobby of collecting stamps as most of them read comics.”

Stamp Week will be held from Dec 1 to 7 and the Lat stamps will be sold at Berjaya Times Square during the period.
