Star MD wins coveted prize

PETALING JAYA: Star Publications (M) Bhd group managing director and chief executive officer Datin Linda Ngiam received the prestigious Chairman’s Award at the 2008 Kancil Awards yesterday.

On winning the award, she said the feeling was “indescribable.”

“To be recognised for doing a job that you love is the icing on the cake. With this award, I will strive to be a good mentor and role model to the people at The Star,” she said after receiving the award.

Colgate Palmolive, meanwhile, was named Advertiser of The Year at the event organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents (4As).

The coveted Golden Kancil Award went to BBDO/Proximity for its anti-drink and drive campaign entitled “Wheelchair.”

It was also the biggest winner of the night, clinching 12 golds, four silvers and 11 bronze.

This year, 22 gold awards were presented, the highest number in more than a decade. Last year there were only nine golds.

4As president Datuk Vincent Lee told The Star: “The standard of advertising, especially digital advertising, has improved tremendously. Malaysian advertising is so close to world standard that today, overseas agencies are recruiting our talents.”

Saatchi & Saatchi, which netted four golds, 22 silvers and two bronze, bagged the Agency of The Year accolade.

This award is based on points accumulated at six international advertising shows — AdFest, Asian Advertising Awards, Cannes, Clio, One Show and D&AD — in addition to the Kancil Awards.

BBDO/Proximity also won the Rebel Idea of 2008 award alongside Naga DDB/Rapp Collins’ Prudential BSN Corporate campaign called “Distraction.”

The 2008 Kancil Awards were unanimously decided by a jury panel that consisted of both local and international judges.
