200 from MIC and NGOs hold demo at Sri Lanka mission
By A. LETCHUMANAN
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 200 people from MIC Youth and non-governmental organisations staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the Sri Lankan High Commission here.
They were protesting yesterday against the Sri Lankan government’s continued air and ground attacks against Sri Lankan Tamils, which they say had resulted in innocent men, women and children being killed and maimed.
The demonstrators led by MIC Youth deputy coordinator S. Murugesan and MIC Youth advisory council chairman S. Ramis decided not to hand over a prepared memorandum of protest when the High Commission was adamant on only allowing MIC Youth leaders into its premises.
Murugesan said the delegation of MIC Youth and NGOs were not agreeable to the condition.
“They want to break us up. This condition is ridiculous,” he said.
He said MIC Youth had already informed the High Commission that they were coming together to hand over the memorandum.
Murugesan said they would initiate a campaign to urge Malaysians to boycott Sri Lankan products as well as the Sri Lanka airline.
“We will hold another demonstration with a much bigger crowd in the near future. We will show our strength,” he said.
