Hannah sets eyes on Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: Always one to challenge herself, singer and television host Hannah Tan has now set her sights on the land of the rising sun.

Tan, 27, will be moving to Tokyo, Japan, next year with hopes of breaking into the entertainment scene there. “No Malaysian has broken into their commercial industry. And I can understand why,’’ she said. “It’s so tough. Their standards are so high,” she told a press conference yesterday.

Tan said she was looking to spend up to two years there - to popularise Malaysian entertainment content through her music and movie scripts, apart from looking for new business opportunities.

“Japan is a leader in digital technology, so I’m trying to see what I can bring back to change the way people do business in the entertainment industry,” she said.

Going bigger: Tan with her parents Daniel Tan, 55, and Aran Ibuh, 52, following her announcement that she would be going to Japan next year. It was also her farewell party.

Tan said she was “very excited,’’ about her stint in Japan though she would be on her own there. “Firstly, I’ll have to learn the language and the culture. Everything moves so fast there.

“I’ll be taking intensive Japanese language classes for the first six months,” she said.

The aim of making waves in Japan is more than just about herself. Tan hopes to create the Malaysian brand there.

“Visionaries like Zang Toi, Datuk Jimmy Choo and Datuk Michelle Yeoh have already paved the way for Malaysia’s global visibility. I look to them as my inspiration.

“If I can make it in Japan, I can make it anywhere,” she said.
