Don’t pass the buck, TNB urged
PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) should sort out its RM500mil payment to the owners of the Jimah power plant on its own and not pass it on to consumers, said Fomca.
“TNB needs to manage its finances well and have its own reserves when dealing with losses,” Fomca president Datuk N. Marimuthu said yesterday.
He said if consumers could manage their expenditure, TNB would surely be able to do the same as it had competent and capable staff to deal with such situations.
“I believe it is unlikely that TNB will increase electricity rates to cover the extra payment. But let’s just wait and see what TNB will do,” he added.
By January, TNB will have to pay for the excess power it currently does not require when the Jimah power producer begins operations.
TNB already pays RM3bil in capacity charges to independent power producers yearly.
Meanwhile, Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the ministry would review electricity tariffs next June.
“For the moment, there won’t be any increase. In fact, if there is a decline in coal prices, we will even see a reduction in electricity tariffs,” he told reporters at his office.
