Nik Mustapha’s term extended for another two years

By KAREN CHAPMAN

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah has been reappointed for a second term.

His term of service, which ends at the end of the month, has been extended for two years.

“We will follow our strategic and transformation plans very closely to ensure UPM becomes a world leader in tropical agriculture,” he told The Star.

Thanking Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and the ministry for having confidence in his ability to lead the university, Prof Nik Mustapha said he would further develop UPM into one of the top universities.

He said he received his reappointment letter from Mohamed Khaled recently.

Prof Nik Mustapha, whose area of expertise is in Agricultural and Resource Economics, has literally grown with the university, first as a student, then as a lecturer and now as the vice-chancellor.

A keen basketball and rugby player at university, he described his three years of study there as fun.

Upon completing his Masters and PhD at the Oregon State University in the United States in the 1980s, he returned to UPM as a lecturer.

“Back then, UPM was still small and the lecturers knew all the students by name,” he said, adding that it was different now as the university was so much bigger.

His previous posts at the university was as deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation and deputy vice-chancellor for development.
