No nudity: Reformis chief stripped of post

By DHARMENDER SINGH

SHAH ALAM: Gerakan Reformasi Rakyat Malaysia (Reformis) has sacked its president Ramlan Abu Bakar and scrapped a proposed plan to strip naked before Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

Reformis acting president Badrul Hisham Mohd Hanafiah said he had been appointed to head the organisation temporarily by its executive council (exco) following Ramlan’s sacking last Thursday.

The exco, he said, decided to sack Ramlan during its meeting last Wednesday for various wrongful acts he allegedly committed, adding that he was informed through a letter the following day.

Among the reasons for the sacking were: Making decisions and statements without consulting the exco, using veto power in decisions, using the organisation like his own company and tarnishing Reformis’ image.

“We want to make known that the issue of a nude squad stalking the Mentri Besar no longer arises and we will look at more civilised ways to achieve our objectives,” he told reporters after leading a delegation to the Mentri Besar’s office here on Monday.

The group held a 45-minute meeting with Khalid’s political secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as Khalid was not at his office during the visit.

Ramlan had announced last month that the organisation’s members planned to strip in protest against a state government decision in July to raise rental for public housing projects (PPR) from RM124 to RM250.

He refused to back down even after Khalid announced that those earning less than RM1,500 would be allowed to pay the old rate while those earning more would be subjected to the new rate.

Badrul Hisham said the decision to strip naked was never a unanimous one by the exco and was announced by Ramlan after manipulating the signatures of the council members.

Meanwhile Ramlan strongly denied the allegations levelled against him and dismissed them as lies.
