MIC treasurer-general Mahalingam sacked
By A. LETCHUMANAN
KUALA LUMPUR: MIC treasurer-general Tan Sri M. Mahalingam, 73, has been removed from his post with immediate effect, said party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
“I have decided to change the treasurer-general. This is a routine exercise and the new treasurer-general would be announced next week,” he said.
Samy Vellu thanked Mahalingam for his service to the party all these years.
“He is a good man but it’s time I appoint a younger person as the treasurer-general.
“I’m making the changes in stages. I will also have to move on and make way for younger people. It’s part of our rebranding exercise,” the 72-year-old Samy Vellu said.
Bernama reported that Mahalingam was informed of his termination via a hand-delivered letter.
“I can only say that he (Samy Vellu) has the right to appoint and remove (the treasurer-general),” he was quoted as saying.
Mahalingam, a former deputy minister, senator and two-time MP, was appointed to the post in 2000.
