Gerakan: Unite against PAS’ stand on hudud

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan has called on Malaysians to unite against PAS’ stand to implement hudud laws if Pakatan Rakyat takes over the country.

“The DAP and PKR must be held responsible for they have failed to stop PAS from spreading its dogmatic ideas, which are against the Federal Constitution in spirit and principle,” Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow said yesterday.

He said both parties should not sweep the hudud issue under the carpet.

“The issue was never resolved when they formed Pakatan Rakyat after the March general election. When the coalition was formed after the election, it has made DAP and PKR accomplices of PAS, thus helping it to achieve its agenda and making Malaysia a theocratic state,” he said.

PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and vice-president Datuk Husam Musa had recently said that the law would be implemented if Pakatan Rakyat formed the government.

In Shah Alam, DAP chairman Karpal Singh wants PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to comment on the matter.

He said Anwar must break his silence on the matter as it was important for him to announce his stand since it concerned a very fundamental issue.

He said the DAP felt it was time that PAS was told that there was limit to what it could do and DAP’s political patience.

In Alor Star, PAS-led Kedah government said it will remain non-committal on the hudud law.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the government would not be drawn into discourse on the matter as Umno was using it for the election campaign.

Azizan said the issue would certainly die down after the Kuala Terengganu by-election.

Azizan said hudud was a religious matter and should not be broached merely for political mileage.

“We do not have a different set of hudud laws for Umno or PAS. If Umno wants to implement it, they should just implement it. They should stop provoking us,” he said.
