Devamany new MIC treasurer-general
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk S.K. Devamany has been appointed the new MIC treasurer-general, party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu announced here Sunday.
The appointment of Devamany, the two-term Cameron Highlands Member of Parliament, will take effect immediately, he said.
On Tuesday, in an abrupt decision, Samy Vellu removed longtime ally Tan Sri M. Mahalingam, 73, from the treasurer-general’s post, and said it was part of the party’s rebranding exercise and a routine change and that it was time he appointed a younger person.
Devamany, 51, in an immediate reaction, told Bernama he was honoured by the appointment and thanked Samy Vellu for appointing him to the post.
“I know it is a heavy responsibility and I vow to do my best. I will continue serving the party and the Malaysian Indian community with more vigour. “My service to the community will continue as usual although the post would take up time. But this is what we are here for and I promise to deliver above expectations,” he said.
Devamany became an MP after he won the Cameron Highlands seat in the 2004 general election and retained it for the ruling Barisan Nasional in the 2008 general election in March. He was appointed a deputy minister after the election.
He obtained his primary and secondary education in Taiping and attended the Specialist Teachers Training Institute in Cheras in 1977. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Malay Literature from Universiti Malaya.
Devamany is also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee and of the National Integrity Committee.
He was awarded a Datukship by the Sultan of Pahang in October. -- Bernama
