Rafidah: Don’t discuss race, religion openly
KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional component party leaders should cease talking about issues of race and religion either in public or through the media, Wanita Barisan Nasional chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said.
She said if issues were discussed openly, there would be no end to the bickering and this could lead to divisiveness not just within the Barisan but also among the people.
Rafidah said quarrelling openly between members of the component parties would only erode the people’s trust in the coalition.
”We are one family. If we have any issue that needs to be settled between us, it can be done through meetings and dialogues that we regularly have with each other.
”Please do not use the media to air our grouses against others. As a family, we do not go to the gate to quarrel. We do it inside the bedroom,” she told reporters after chairing the Barisan Wanita meeting at Menara Dato’ Onn here yesterday.
Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal called on MPs not to twist the ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy) issue for the sake of gaining political mileage.
Shafie, who also called for open debates on such matters to cease, said ketuanan Melayu didn’t mean that the culture of master and underling existed in the country because the country practised democratic principles based on constitutional monarchy.
“There’s no such thing as a master-underling relationship between Umno and MCA or Umno and Gerakan,” he said.
