Vet Dept seals 10 pig farms
PUTRAJAYA: Ten pig farms have been quarantined by the Veterinary Services Department, its director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin said.
He said pigs would not be allowed to enter or leave the farms following the discovery of beta agonist, a banned growth enhancer, in pig feed.
Dr Abdul Aziz said the department had conducted tests since September on 490 of the 656 pig farms nationwide and found that the 10 had used the drug.
He said five farms were in Malacca, three in Selangor and one each in Perak and Penang.
Farms in Kedah and Johor were still free of the drug, he added.
“The farms involved have been quarantined, which means the pigs are not allowed to leave.
“The livestock will not be issued health certificates for the moment and cannot be slaughtered,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Dr Abdul Aziz said the farm owners had been given 30 days to clean up any trace of the drug in the feed supply system and ensure the animals were free of beta agonist.
He said that after the 30-day period, the farmers could appeal for their quarantine orders to be retracted and veterinary enforcement personnel would conduct tests on all pigs on the farms.
However, he said, the farms would be quarantined for another 90 days if the pigs still tested positive. — Bernama
