Mat Taib: All Umno supreme council members agreed to sack Zaid
PETALING JAYA: The decision to sack former Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was supported by all Umno supreme council members.
Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib said the supreme council’s decision was unanimous as every member agreed Zaid’s transgression was too serious to be forgiven.
“That is why we decided to sack him rather than suspend his rights as a member,” he said.
“Furthermore, it was obvious that he had wanted us to act against him. Otherwise, why would he have kept attending opposition parties’ functions while at the same time claiming to be an Umno member?”
Muhammad said the party had no choice but to sack Zaid as his actions in the last two months had been tantamount to challenging the party to act against him.
“By being seen with opposition leaders not just once, but many times in the course of a very short time, he was daring us to take action. It also looks like he was supporting their cause and that is unforgivable,” he added.
Council of the Association of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang said it was only right for any party to sack a disloyal member.
“Zaid has not only been a thorn in the flesh to some Umno leaders, but he had also acted beyond decency when he attended meetings together with leaders from the opposition parties only days after leaving the Cabinet,” he said when ask to comment on Zaid’s sacking by the Umno supreme council on Tuesday night.
He said this was despite Zaid being handpicked by Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to be the de-facto Law Minister although he was not an elected representative.
“That shows how disrespectful he was to the Government and Umno,” he said.
He said Zaid’s failure in carrying out his duties as the de-facto Law Minister was nobody’s fault as it was due to his weakness and arrogance.
Abu Zahar said Zaid’s sacking was no loss to Umno because he had not contributed much to the party and the nation even as a member.
“Throughout his tenure as a minister, he had always acted and behaved like a member of the opposition party. Now that he has been sacked, he can officially join any one of them,” he said.
