Ex-Olympian Koh Chye dies
PETALING JAYA: Former Olympian Datuk Ho Koh Chye, 66, passed away at the Kelana Jaya Medical Centre here last night.
The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) secretary, Hashim Mohd Yusoff, who was at the hospital, said that Koh Chye, the former national hockey goalkeeper, had undergone surgery for prostate cancer last week.
He said that Koh Chye was readmitted due to complications.
Koh Chye, who honed his skills at the St Paul’s Institution in Seremban, kept goal for Malaysia in two consecutive Olympics — in Tokyo in 1964 and in Mexico four years later.
He also coached the Malaysian squad to a fourth placing in the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, the national hockey team’s best-ever result to date.
Koh Chye was well known in the sports fraternity and it earned him the role of chef-de-mission to the Beijing Olympics in August.
