Humbling time for Khairy

Khairy contesting in Rembau

REMBAU: A humbling experience – this is how Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin described his 1km walk to the nomination centre here accompanied by some 5,000 supporters to file his papers.

Walking alongside Mentri Besar and Rantau incumbent Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, 32-year-old Khairy, who is contesting the Rembau parliamentary seat, kept stopping to shake hands with his supporters.

His wife Nori Abdullah, 31, and his mother Datuk Rahmah Abdul Hamid, 72, accompanied him all the way from the Barisan Nasional operations centre near here to the centre, Dewan Merdeka.

Family experience: Khairy chatting with his mother Rahmah and his wife Nori at the nomination centre at Dewan Merdeka, Rembau, Sunday morning.

Khairy, who filed his papers at 9.08am, is being challenged by PKR's Badrul Hisham Shaharin, 30, who contested against Mohamad Hasan and lost heavily in 2004.

The Rantau state seat is under the Rembau parliamentary constituency.

Asked about claims by his critics that he was handed the seat on a silver platter, Khairy said such claims were ridiculous as he was the division's Youth chief.

“My family, my father and I are all from here. I have my roots here. If I were to contest a seat, it has to be Rembau,” he said.

Nori said it was a special day for her as this time around as she was accompanying her husband to file his papers.

“I had accompanied my father (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) on several occasions previously and this time, it is just as special. I am so happy for being able to be with my husband here,” she said, adding that she would also be helping out in the campaign.

Nori said their five-month-old son Jibreil Ali was also in town and would be looked after by family members here when they both go campaigning.

The state has eight parliamentary and 36 state seats. All the parliamentary seats except Telok Kemang will see straight fights between Barisan and opposition candidates.

Incumbent MP for Telok Kemang Datuk S. Sothinathan will face PKR state chief Datuk Kamarul Bahrin Abbas and businessman Mohd Rashid Arshad, who is standing as an Independent.
