Do your best, candidates told

TANJUNG MALIM: MCA candidates have been urged to give their best during the campaigning period and not think about winning or losing.

Perak MCA chief Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, who is party secretary-general, said: “MCA candidates should concentrate on campaigning and maximise every minute and second to do that. There are still many days to campaign and one should not think about winning or losing before polling day,” he said.

“Do not underestimate yourself and we emphasise team work here,” said Ong, after attending a dinner with 26 Chinese associations, clans and guilds here on Wednesday.

Ong said this to a question about young MCA candidates Dr Liew Mun Hon who is facing DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang in Ipoh Timur, Cheah Yoke Can against DAP’s Fong Po Kuan in Batu Gajah and MCA veteran Datuk Yik Phooi Hong who is up against the opposition party’s M. Kulasegaran (DAP) in Ipoh Barat.

Learning opportunity: Ong trying his hand at making roti canai as cook Kamaluddin Ismail helps him while Behrang candidate Datuk M. Ramasamy (extreme right) looks on. Ong’s wife Chan Beng Choo claps her hands at his attempt as Perak Wanita MCA head Chew Poh Toi encourages him to carry on.
Lim, Fong and Kulasegaran are all incumbents while Dr Liew and Cheah are new candidates.

Ong said: “We hope our new faces can topple the veteran giants.”

He said the Perak MCA lost three parliamentary seats and six state seats to the opposition in last elections and hoped to wrest the seats back this time.

“The party has started work after losing the seats in last elections. Dr Liew and Cheah maybe unknown to others but they have been involved in party work for some time and have also worked with locals to solve their problems. “It is up to the people to vote and decide now,” he said.
