Thieves who kept record of crimes

By KELVIN GOH WONG

KUALA LUMPUR: They are thieves who kept tabs on crime – the ones they themselves committed. They would laminate clippings of their crimes reported in the newspapers.

Their crime spree came to an end when Sentul police moved in on them last Tuesday, raiding their hideouts in Wangsa Maju, Cheras and Damansara Damai.

Laminated news clippings of their crimes were among the items seized from the hideouts.

Also recovered were laptop computers, cameras, road-tax discs of taxis, watches, CD players and car stereo sets.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Sofian Md. Yassin said the gang members would pose as air conditioning technicians and target houses of residents who are away for extended periods.

They would also steal cars using modified keys.

“This group is involved in break-ins and car thefts. The four arrested are currently out on bail pending a court hearing on March 8 and 14 for previous cases,” ACP Sofian said.

“The four, aged between 20 and 30, also tested positive for drug abuse,” he said.

ACP Sofian also said the group’s activities had been weakened following the arrests, and police were hot on the trail of the mastermind who eluded the dragnet last Tuesday.

He reminded the public to inform the police before leaving for long holidays so that the police could plan more frequent patrols in the area.

ACP Sofian also advised victims of break-ins and car thefts to come forward to identify the criminals as well as the loot recovered.
