Barisan reps come under watch

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional component party chiefs have pledged to closely monitor Members of Parliament from their respective parties and prevent them from switching to other parties, particularly to the Opposition.

“The component party chiefs met the Prime Minister and made this pledge,” Umno vice president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He was speaking to reporters during his first press conference here yesterday as International Trade and Industry Minister.

On Umno’s plan to send a team to investigate reports of attempts to buy over Barisan elected representatives in Sabah and Sarawak by the Opposition, Muhyiddin said the matter was being looked into by the Umno secretary-general.

“As far as I am concerned, elected representatives who won on a Barisan ticket must discharge their responsibility well and deliver all the promises, as stated in the manifesto.

Muhyiddin also urged members to think carefully before taking action that would impact the party.

“Please ensure that whatever we do will not weaken the party. If it can strengthen the party, then we should not prevent it,” he said when commenting on Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s offer to contest the Umno presidency at the up coming general assembly.

The Umno veteran had also called for a special Umno meeting to discuss Barisan’s dismal performance at the general election.

“It’s up to Ku Li (Tengku Razaleigh). As a member of the Umno supreme council, I believe in the party constitution. He is free to do what he likes as long as it is not against the party constitution,” he said.

Asked whether Umno would join a Malay unity forum organised by the Malays United Action Front, he said: “The objective to unite the Malays is a good idea. However, we have to really study the matter as not much is known about this body.” – Bernama
