Terengganu Umno wants to sack rep for defying order

KUALA TERENGGANU: The state Umno liaison committee wants to strip Kijal assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Said of his party membership for disobeying the instruction of its leaders.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said Ahmad had been warned on Saturday to not go against the wishes of Prime Minister and party president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Abdullah had made it clear that he wanted to retain Idris as Mentri Besar.

“He (Ahmad) went against the instruction of the Prime Minister and has to face the music now,” the Jertih assemblyman said when met here yesterday.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said several procedures needed to be carried out before a member is sacked from the party.

On Saturday, state Umno liaison committee secretary Datuk Rosol Wahid wrote a letter to Ahmad, 51, cautioning him not to go against Abdullah’s instructions. Rosol, in the letter which was faxed to The Star here yesterday, stated that Ahmad’s membership would be stripped if he went against Abdullah’s wishes.

However, Ahmad received the letter of appointment as the new Terengganu Mentri Besar from the Regency Advisory Council at a closed-door ceremony at Istana Tetamu here at 8.20am here yesterday.

Idris was unperturbed when asked by reporters how he felt now that his once-trusted lieutenant (Ahmad) had shunned him and taken his appointment letter as the new Terengganu Mentri Besar.

“I have no qualms. But I do feel sad that Ahmad had neither consulted nor talked to me when the (MB) crisis began. We had a good working relationship before,” he said at his residence in Batu Burok here.

Idris said Ahmad had served in his previous state executive council, chairing the Housing and Local Government portfolio.

Idris said he received strong backing from Abdullah and his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to be retained as Mentri Besar.

“I also have the undivided support of Barisan assemblymen and the people,” he said.
