Anwar: PKR reps must carry out duties diligently
SHAH ALAM: PKR MPs and state assemblymen have been reminded to draw a clear line between politics and business, said party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The party’s elected representatives should also carry out their duties diligently while observing the necessary code of behaviour and ethics, Anwar told a press conference at a leadership seminar organised by PKR for its elected representatives here yesterday.
He also gave an assurance that PKR leaders such as him would ensure that the rights of the Malays were taken care of, adding that the rights of the Chinese, Indians and other races would also be taken care of in tandem.
Anwar said the seminar was held to discuss several issues and policies aimed at strengthening ties with PAS and DAP – PKR’s Pakatan Rakyat partners.
On his plans after he becomes eligible to contest for public office tomorrow, Anwar said, “My personal plans are not the priority now.
“I want to ensure that the Pakatan Rakyat coalition leads with good governance, accountability and democracy.”
However, he said the plan for a PKR-held parliamentary seat to be vacated for him to contest to become an elected representative still stood.
Asked to comment on former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s recent salvo against him, Anwar said the former premier was “a bit too tired and confused.”
Anwar also said that he had refrained from retaliating to Dr Mahathir’s criticism for the last two years because he wanted to move on.
He said Dr Mahathir should explain why he destroyed the judiciary, controlled the media and detained hundreds of people under the Internal Security Act.
“He has to also explain his involvement in various corrupt practices, serious mismanagement as well as stealing funds through the destruction of many government-controlled companies such as Perwaja (Steel),” said Anwar.
Anwar added that Dr Mahathir should also concentrate on his health as well as apologise to all Malaysians.
Asked about the succession plan involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Anwar said that he did not know of the plan at all.
“But I know that Umno is in turmoil, together with the MIC, Gerakan and MCA.
“The best option (for them) would be to join Pakatan Rakyat,” said Anwar.
