Make NS fitness and health checks compulsory
ANOTHER National Service trainee had died. One way to prevent urther deaths is to subject potential trainees to a fitness and health check first.
Most of them have led sheltered lives and the sudden exposure to tough activities and conditions can lead to harmful or fatal effects. Their medical conditions are not known, until these activities push them to their limits of endurance.
The other alternative is to make NS applicable for males only.
Besides the current NS format, another beneficial way to foster team spirit, confidence and self esteem is to follow a strictly academic regime – by having motivational and inspirational training programmes with workshops, role play and scenario testing.
If all these cannot be achieved before the next NS programme, then the authorities should seriously stop it altogether, before further tragedy strikes.
