IGP: Interviews over Karpal Singh’s statement on sultan a part of probe

GERIK: Police are interviewing reporters who covered Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh over his statement allegedly questioning the power of the Sultan of Perak.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said recording statements from reporters was part of the police investigation.

“All reporters who interviewed him (Karpal Singh) will have their statements recorded. I can’t reveal off-hand how many reporters will be interviewed,” he said.

He expected the investigation to be completed soon.

“We will hand over our investigation paper to the Attorney-General in two or three days,” he told reporters after launching a new marine police beat base at Banding island in Tasik Temenggor near here yesterday.

Karpal Singh was alleged to have said that the Sultan of Perak had no jurisdiction over the transfer of Datuk Jamry Sury from the Perak Religious Department.

In Kuala Kangsar, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said Karpal Singh need not be afraid of calls by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to the Attorney-General to speed up investigations, adding that it was a “normal thing”.

“Under the constitution, the power to prosecute lies with the Attorney-General but whether the A-G press charges depends on him,” he said yesterday.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Kampung Cheh Hulu in Kati near here, Nazri, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the call by the Prime Minister was due to feedback from the grassroots.

“Many Malays are unhappy with what Karpal Singh did,” he said.

To a question why no action was taken against Terengganu Umno liaison committee secretary Datuk Rosol Wahid for disobeying the Sultan of Terengganu in the appointment of the Mentri Besar, Nazri said action should have been taken against Rosol as there were police reports made against him.
