Umno tribute to mothers, Ahmad Sarji
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno celebrated its 62nd anniversary with a special tribute to all mothers attending the occasion at PWTC here yesterday.
Before the event started, the emcee made it a point to remind delegates that yesterday was also Mother’s Day and went on to wish the mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. The few thousand Umno members, led by president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi broke into applause.
Red-and-white balloons, the colour of Umno, were strung on the ceiling of the main hall and were released at the end of the function, creating a party atmosphere.
Abdullah, clad in a red baju melayu, had earlier raised the party flag after the members sang Negaraku.
The occasion also marked the debut of Umno’s new song, entitled Umno Tetap di HatiKu (Umno is still in my heart). The members stood and joined in the singing, but many were seen struggling with the lyrics, prompting the emcee to say she expected members to know the song by heart in future party events.
After Abdullah’s speech, Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) chairman and former Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid was honoured with the Outstanding Malay Award .
He received the award from Abdullah.
The Umno leaders later went for special prayers held in conjunction with the celebration. There was also lunch served for all.
Earlier, before the event started, when the leaders arrived, they were greeted just outside the entrance by a boisterous group of Umno youth members carrying anti-Karpal Singh banners and shouting slogans.
