Pairin joins ‘Govt must attend to Sabah’ chorus

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan has joined fellow Sabahans in asking the Federal Government to attend to the state's problems, saying “it is the only sensible thing to do”.

“What happened in the last general election is something which told the leaders and the Government that they cannot simply ignore issues brought up by the people,” he told the press prior to launching the 13th Lamai Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) here yesterday.

“When you are bombarded with questions and given issues which are expected to be attended to, then I think the only sensible thing to do is to attend to it.”

He said this when asked to comment on remarks made in Parliament by former Deputy Plantation, Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Anifah Aman (BN – Kimanis), who had likened talk of Sabah MPs switching allegiance from Barisan Nasional to Pakatan Rakyat to “moving house”.

Pairin, who is Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president, gave his own analogy, saying a patient who complains of pains obviously expects his doctor to attend to his woes.

Asked if the situation has been “painful” for Sabah MPs, he replied: “It has always been painful.”

The Harvest Festival, organised by the Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association Klang Valley, was a chance for Sabahans in the Klang Valley to get together and be entertained with dances, cultural performances and the Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen) pageant.

“Such functions can build a bridge between the people of Semenanjung (the peninsula), and the people of Sabah and Sarawak,” said Pairin.
