Sikh youth group donates RM20,000
SEREMBAN: The Sikh Naujawann Sabha (Sikh Youth Organisation) donated RM20,000 yesterday to The Star Myanmar Relief Fund in aid of the victims of Cyclone Nargis.
Its president Malkith Singh said members of the organisation decided to chip in after reading about the plight of the Myanmar people and the need for urgent aid.
“We hope the money will be channelled towards items that are urgently needed by the victims and their families such as water purifying sachets and dry rations,” said Malkith Singh when handing over a cheque at The Star office here.
Malkith Singh, who is also the Malaysian Gurdwara’s Council secretary, said the contribution was only part of the organisation’s efforts to reach out to the cyclone victims.

With aid still inaccessible to many of the victims of Cyclone Nargis, the organisation has decided to team up with its counterpart, the Bangkok Sikh Gurdwara, to extend food and medical aid to those in dire need of help.
“We are trying to raise another RM50,000 for food and medical supplies for the victims.
“As soon as we receive the green light from our contacts in Myanmar, volunteers from our disaster relief mission will send the supplies via our counterparts in Bangkok,” he said.
To date, the relief fund stands at RM1,039,059.48.
