Hawker stalls raise price of cooked rice in Penang
PENANG: The price for a plate of rice at hawker stalls and nasi kandar outlets here have gone up by between 25% and 50%.
This translates into prices increasing from 80 sen to between RM1 and RM1.20.
Hawkers and nasi kandar operators in George Town, Bayan Baru and Air Itam said they had to raise prices following the higher cost of rice.
Mariani Ahmad Din, a food hawker in Bayan Baru, claimed she had increased the price last week, as she could no longer absorb the rising cost of raw rice.
“It is impossible for us to keep selling at the old price when the price of rice is going up. We cannot make a profit.
“We can find ways to overcome the seasonal increase in the price of fish and chicken but the price of rice keeps going up,” she said.
Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Operators Association president K.K. Sihabutheen Kirudu Mohd said the association had agreed to allow its members to increase the price of cooked rice up to RM1.20 per plate.
“We made the decision on Tuesday after observing that the price of rice had been increasing over the past few months.
“We were hoping the price of raw rice would go down. But it kept going up. So we had to let our members increase the price.
“We do empathise with our customers, but we hope they understand our predicament. We do not want to lose our customers,” he said.
A few nasi kandar operators also called for standardisation in nasi kandar prices across the country.
“Some are saying that nasi kandar should be cheaper in Penang and Kedah compared with Kuala Lumpur.
“But fast-food franchisees are allowed to sell at the same rate throughout the country,” Sihabutheen said.
