Foreign detainees: Immigration tortured us
KUALA LUMPUR: Foreigners arrested following a riot at the Lenggeng detention camp in Negri Sembilan on April 20 have alleged that they were tortured by immigration officers.
Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Commissioner Datuk N. Sivasubramaniam said 14 Indonesians and Myanmars claimed the incident took place on the journey from the camp to the Seremban district police headquarters on April 24.
“They also had cigarette burnt marks,” said Subramaniam yesterday after meeting Tenaganita, Suaram and the Bar Council’s human rights committee at the Suhakam headquarters.
He received a memorandum, which included a report from the 14 detainees, asking Suhakam to investigate incidents of torture.
“A Pakistani also claimed that he was beaten. He was beaten so badly that he could not walk and had to crawl when I visited him,” said Sivasubramaniam.
Immigration director of enforcement Datuk Ishak Mohamad said the department would wait for Suhakam’s report before commenting.
