Hero owed it all to loyal wife

KUALA LUMPUR: Sher Mohamed Allah Baksh, who valiantly battled the communists during the insurgency, was able to do so because his wife stood by his side throughout his 35-year career in the police force.

“It is befitting that my book on him is being launched a few days after Mothers Day,” said his son Rafique Sher Mohamed, 59.

Nearly 200 people attended the launch of Kismet, a biography of Sher Mohamed by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the Royal Lake Club yesterday.

Present was Sher Mohamed's widow Chegoya Bibi, 85.

“This book is not just a labour of love to my father but my mother who raised us while he was saving the country,” said Rafique.

Fitting tribute: Rafique showing his mother Chegoya Bibi a copy of Kismet which was launched by Dr Mahathir at the Royal Lake Club yesterday. Looking on is Rafique’s granddaughter Tania Zubir.

Sher Mohamed, who died in 1996 at 81, had come from India when he was 14.

He joined the police force of the Federated Malay States in 1934.

He and Chegoya have three sons and four daughters.

Sher Mohamed served in the police force for 35 years before retiring in 1969.

After retiring, he became Universiti Malaya director of security for 11 years.

Dr Mahathir, who did not know the late Sher Mohamed personally, said that a book like Kismet was important because it immortalised a piece of the country's history.

Former Inspector-General of Police Tun Mohd Hanif Omar highlighted major events in Sher Mohamed's police career.

It also talked about the physical courage he had shown during the many shootouts he had been involved in, he said.

Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid remembered Sher Mohamed for his loyalty and ability to assure him of his safety during the student uprising at the university in the 1970s.
