Kuala Lumpur to host 9th Forbes CEO conference

KUALA LUMPUR: Business magazine publisher Forbes will be holding its ninth Forbes Global CEO Conference in Kuala Lumpur next year.

Under an agreement signed with International Trade and Industry Ministry secretary general Datuk Abdul Rahman Mamat, the Malaysian Government will be the “host sponsor” of the event, which will take place in late September or early October.

It is the first time that the high-profile event will be staged in Malaysia.

William Adamopoulos, president and publisher of Forbes Asia, said: “We are delighted with the keen interest and support from the Malaysian Government and look forward to staging the conference in Kuala Lumpur for the first time.

“We are confident that our community of captains of industry and heroes of capitalism will appreciate the opportunity to meet in Kuala Lumpur, one of Asia's major crossroads of trade.”

Rahman said conference delegates would be “suitably impressed with Malaysia, which is not only an attractive destination for foreign investments, but a conducive place to work and live in.”

“This will also increase the appreciation of Malaysia as an ideal business location.”

This year's conference, to be held in Singapore for the second year running, brings together more than 400 “heroes of capitalism” to discuss key global issues of the day.

Singapore has confirmed high-profile speakers including ArcelorMittal president and chief executive officer (CEO) Lakshmi N. Mittal, actor and One Foundation, China founder Jet Li and Sybase USA chairman and CEO John Chen.

The Malaysian speakers include Tune Group, Malaysia chairman Datuk Tony Fernandes and YTL Corp Bhd managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.

Attendance to the conference, to be held from Sept 8 to 10 in Sentosa, is exclusive and limited to chairmen, CEOs and presidents of corporations at a US$8,000 fee.

The conference has been held in Asia since 2001. In the last eight years, it has travelled to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.

This year's theme is “The Winning Hand”, in reference to a winning hand in a game of cards.

Issues to be discussed include how to reinvest and expand a business once it has been dealt a winning hand, the issue of philanthropy, as well as the credit crunch and the sub-prime problem.

The theme for the 2009 conference in Kuala Lumpur was yet to be decided, Adamopoulos said.
