No abuse of soldiers by trainers, says veteran

KUALA LUMPUR: The commando trainees who were seen in a video clip to have been subjected to “abuse” were merely undergoing basic training, said chairman of the Malaysian Veteran Commando Club Datuk Abdul Rahim Dahalan.

He was commenting on a video clip that was shown at the Parliament lobby by Machang MP Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Wednesday, which showed several trainees lying face down with their trainers stepping on them and apparently whipping them.

“It was part and parcel of the vigorous training to prepare them mentally, physically and spiritually.”

He said it was basic training that all trainees have to undergo and believed that the clip shown may have only been an orientation session.

Abdul Rahim said trainees are soldiers who are taken in on a voluntary basis.

They are aware of the tough training and that every aspect of their training has its reason.

However, trainees are not told the exact training module they would undergo, as they have to expect the unexpected.

“The commandos are an elite force that defends the country. Hence, they require such training to build endurance and character. One commando equals 30 infantrymen. A commando must be ready to die for his country.”

Special Forces all around the world also go through such harsh training.

Abdul Rahim, who retired in 1980, also spoke of his experience as a commando. He joined the 1969 batch which had 265 commando trainees and only 12 made it, including him.

He felt Saifuddin's intention of bringing up the matter was politically motivated.
