RM8.2mil for disaster victims

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has given US2.5mil (RM8.2mil) to help the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and the earthquake in China.

Two separate statements from the Foreign Ministry said US1mil (RM3.28mil) would be channelled to Myanmar, while the remaining US1.5mil (RM4.92mil) donated by the Cabinet would be in aid of the Chinese victims.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said he hoped the humanitarian assistance would lessen the burden faced by some of the victims.

Dr Rais will hand the contribution over to Myanmar Foreign Minister Nyan Win at the Asean Foreign Ministers Special Meeting in Singapore on Monday.

The aid for China has been sent to the Embassy of China here.

In addition, Dr Rais said that on May 12, humanitarian supplies worth RM500,000 was extended to the Myanmar victims.

The supplies included blankets, clothing, dry food, medicines, tents and water purification tablets.

“Mercy Malaysia also sent a four-member relief team to Yangon, and allocated an initial RM150,000 for aid response and started to look into areas such as shelter, clean water, sanitation and emergency medical treatment.

“Crest Malaysia and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society have also sent relief teams.

“My ministry has also joined in the effort by activating its Disaster Relief Fund to enable Malaysians to channel monetary contributions,” he said.
