I’m not an ambitious politician, says Muhyiddin

NEW YORK: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is widely seen to be contemplating to run for one of Umno’s top two posts, but he says he is not an ambitious person.

“I’m the least ambitious of any politician that you know,” the Umno vice-president said.

Muhyiddin, here on an investment mission, was at a dinner held in his honour at the Consulate-General where, during a question-and-answer session, a Malaysian undergraduate asked whether he was a potential Prime Minister.

“Even schoolchildren say they want to be prime minister when you ask them what they want to be when they grow up,” he said.

Most politicians, he said, would have high aspirations “but the issue here is that Malaysia needs to have a strong leadership to push the country forward”.

“I leave it to the audience to analyse that,” he said.

Describing himself as pragmatic, Muhyiddin said the profile of the Malaysian population had changed dramatically, which meant that political leaders needed to tap into the minds of the people.

“We have to grasp this change in thinking. The younger generation has no baggage from the past, of how we fought for independence.”

The next four years, he said, would be pivotal for Malaysia.

Muhyiddin, who is the International Trade and Industry Minister, stressed that the Federal Government would maintain a cordial relationship with the five states now under Pakatan Rakyat rule.

“We want to send the right message to foreign investors,” he said.

“There’s no such thing of not wanting to deal with them,” he said.
