By CLARA CHOOI
IPOH: Driving against traffic on the North-South Expressway with handcuffs on, a drug suspect made his escape in the police car he was being escorted in.
The drama unfolded at 1.15pm Thursday when three policemen stopped for a toilet break at the Tapah rest area, some 60km from here.
The policemen from Klang were escorting the 24-year-old suspect from Alor Star for a drug case in Klang scheduled for Friday.
It is believed that at the rest area, two policemen alighted from the vehicle while one stayed behind to watch over the suspect.
The suspect, however, managed to get into the front seat after a scuffle, successfully pushing the escort out the door and taking off in the car.
The man first exited at the Bidor toll plaza, some 20km from Tapah, but on realising that the police were hot on his heels, re-entered the North-South Expressway heading south.
He then noticed a police roadblock at the 265th kilometre of the expressway near Tanjung Malim. made a U-turn. He drove against traffic for some 5km, heading north on the southbound lane before crashing the vehicle into a tree by the side of the road. He took off on foot into the Felda Trolak Selatan oil palm plantation in Slim River.
As at 7.30pm, Slim River OCPD Supt Mohd Ali said the police had yet to detain the suspect.
