22 websites, blogs probed
TWENTY-TWO websites and blogs have been investigated by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for airing false, pornographic and baseless allegations, the Dewan Negara was told.
Deputy Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum told Senator Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain that out of those blogs investigated, the commission had also forwarded three investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
“Most of the blogs and websites are being operated using platforms from overseas and efforts to obtain evidence necessary for action often come to a dead end. Therefore, it’s very hard to take legal action against these blogs,” he said.

Joseph said the commission also did not license blogging activities, making it hard for both the ministry and commission to have a comprehensive list of those behind these websites and blogs.
To another question, Joseph said the Government did not intend to set up a special body to counter “irresponsible blogging” as there were adequate laws such as Sedition Act and the Penal Code in place.
Earlier, two new senators fielded by the PAS-led Kedah state assembly took their oaths at the Dewan Negara.
PAS state secretary Muhamad Yusof, 54, and Kedah PKR chairman Zamri, 43, are first-time senators.
Both were named to replace Umno’s Datuk Yaakob Mohamad and Chua Khim Chuan from MCA whose terms expired on April 10.
Muhamad said he would play his role to bridge the gap between federal and state governments so that the people of Kedah would enjoy the same benefits as their counterparts from other states.
Senate secretary Datuk Zamani Sulaiman said there are 58 senators now.
There were also three vacancies, one each from Kelantan, Malacca and Johor to be filled in the Senate, he said.
