Fuel ban will affect many Malaysians too
I REFER to the announcement by Domestic Trade and Consumer Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad banning all foreign-registered cars pumping petrol or diesel at petrol stations in border states.
I am a Malaysian staying in Johor Baru but I work in Singapore. I drive to work and although I would prefer to drive a Malaysian-registered car due to the price difference in road tax, all Malaysian citizens who are also Singapore Permanent Resident are not allowed to drive foreign-registered cars in Singapore.
Again, all Malaysia-registered cars are charged a flat S$20 and motorcycles S$4 daily, excluding other toll charges, to enter Singapore during working days. This is another reason why non-PR Malaysians are driving SG registered cars.
More than 90% of Singapore cars and motorcycle owners that pump petrol in Johor Baru are Malaysians with a Singapore PR.
The Minister being an MP from Johor Baru should have known this. A better system should have been formulated so that it does not affect Malaysians. We spend our earnings in Malaysia and also pay income tax as well as all our other taxes both in Singapore and Malaysia.
A proper study should have been taken before such important statements are made.
ARULRAJAH SENATHYRAJAH,
Johor Baru.
