Ex-engineer wants to make tool for cancer research use
A FORMER engineer wants to make an instrument to measure electromagnetic wave radiation to help UiTM medical faculty Associate Professor Dr Adlina Suleiman strengthen her research on the risk of cancer on those living near telecommunication towers in Selangor.
Harian Metro reported that Kam Ewe Kian, in his mid 60s, said once he completed the apparatus, he would hand it over to Dr Adlina for her research.
“A book on the apparatus is with me and I am confident that I can make it. The apparatus will strengthen Dr Adlina’s research,” he said, adding that the research should be backed by the Government and other parties.
The daily earlier reported that Dr Adlina was planning to carry out advanced research on the subject and would forward a working paper to get the state government to approve and fund it.
Kam said he felt obliged to make the apparatus in view of his knowledge and because five residents in Kampung Tunku housing scheme were suffering from cancer.
“I don’t want to make assumptions without evidence but the housing scheme has two telecommunication towers which is less than 50m from my house,” he said, adding that his wife was diagnosed with cancer three years ago.
> The daily also carried a report about Hashim Yahya, 65, known as Pak Mali, living alone in a hut he built on a tree in front of the ferry terminal in Kuala Perlis.
Hashim said that initially he used the tree as a rest area after fishing but later decided to build a hut using used items including wood, planks and boxes, that has now turned into his home.
“I intend to spend the remaining days of my life in this ugly hut. It has been my home for the past four years. To me it is very comfortable and peaceful because of the cold winds from the sea.”
Hashim said that his five children, aged between 18 and 35, did not object to his decision to stay there after the death of his wife four years ago.
The hut is built about three-metres above the ground and is equipped with a bathroom for him to bathe and clean himself before prayers.
However, it is not equipped with electricity as Hashim felt that light from a shop nearby was sufficient.
The building owner provides him with clean water and allows him to use the toilets there.
Hashim has plans to marry a 38-year-old woman and bring her to stay in his hut.
