Raja Petra refuses all visitors

By M. MAGESWARI

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin remains adamant in his refusal to meet anyone, including his wife.

After having failed to meet him at 10.30am, Marina Lee Abdullah, who was accompanied by their youngest daughter, Sarah and lawyer Matthias Chang to the Sungai Buloh Prison, attempted again at noon.

Marina, 54, said she had been insistent in wanting to meet her spouse but the warden said that Raja Petra had refused all visitors.

However, she managed to deliver the spectacles he had requested earlier via a prison warden.

The housewife said she believed that Raja Petra, 58, is also declining meals in prison as he had acted similarly when he was detained under the Internal Security Act for 52 days in 2001.

“I will try again to see him today. I have told the prison official to tell him that I will not stop coming by every day until he sees me,” Marina said when contacted.

Sarah, 19, said her mother was trying her level best to meet Raja Petra as she wanted to “get the green light from him before withdrawing the money for his bail.”

His lawyer J. Chandra, who confirmed that Raja Petra had refused bail, said the defence team was unable to meet Raja Petra yesterday but would try again today.

In the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court here, several well-wishers came to the court to find out whether Raja Petra would post bail following press reports that his readers had contributed between RM24,500 and RM10,441.87 (the equivalent of US$3,283.61 donated in US currency) via an online campaign for his bail.

At 4.30pm, a court official confirmed that no one had asked to process bail for Raja Petra.

“If his wife or anyone approaches us for his bail, the court has to issue an order to produce him in court for the purpose. The police will normally need a day to make the necessary arrangements,” she added.
